IMPORTANT: To send to any of our mailing lists, please make sure you follow the following guidelines:
DO:
- In order to belong to any mailing list, please join the "members" mailing list first. Similarly, if you wish to drop of
the general mailing list, please terminate your subscription to all other mailing lists. We do not want to break our membership into many unconnected lists, and want a common point of contact for everyone.
- When sending a message to one of our mailing lists, use the e-mail address that you used when you subscribed to it. This is to help eliminate spam from our lists. The list software will automatically reject all messages from email addresses that are not subscribed to that list. If this happens, you will have to resend your message from the correct email address.
- You should see all email you send to any list sent back to you, unless you specifically selected the option of not to see your own messages. If you do not see your messages, please contact us and we will work with you to diagnose the situation.
- Keep messages on topic: subjects about Linux or Open Source are likely to be of interest to Linux users. Please refer to the KLUG Mailing List page for descriptions of the current lists.
- Use the correct list. KLUG has numerous specialized lists. Check the list sign up page for descriptions of the lists.
- When replying to a message on a list, please try to trim out the quoted parts which do not apply. A sensible level of quoting, however, is a Good Thing. It's good Netiquette to add your text after the relevent quoted portion.
- "Praise in public; criticize in private." It's OK to correct factual errors on the list as long as you are polite and just correct the facts. Be careful about uses of "you" and "your" in replies, since they make the response personal.
- Search the site before posting a question to see if it's been already answered.
DO NOT:
- DO NOT hijack threads!!! If you are sending a new message to the list, compose a new message and send it. DO NOT hit reply on an unrelated message and change the subject for your new message. This causes problems for people using real email clients that display messages in threaded views.
- Do not post messages in HTML. Although you may think that sending something in HTML form gives you more control over how it will appear when read, the results are often not what you expect. Some people still do not use email clients that decode HTML, and your message will look like <jibberish> to them. It is also a tremendous waste of bandwidth and also increases the ability of the message to harbor nefarious content.
- Do not crosspost! (Do not send your message to more than one recipient — if necessary, break your message up into multiple e-mails and send separately to different lists.)
- Do not attach files to your messages! (PGP keys are ok). If you have a
file you wish to share with the group, please post a URL. Attachments are an
even bigger waste of bandwidth. You may, however, send small snippets of code, attached as text/plain, but try to provide a URL instead if you can.
- Vcards are frowned upon but tolerated.
- Don't send "me too", "thank you", or any short messages that do not add value to the discussion. Please send those replies privately. Short messages without value are wasteful, but feel free to respond if you have more to add on the subject. Acknowledging that a certain solution worked is always welcome.
- KLUG cannot accept nor support advertising messages on any mailing list.
Advertising is a message intended to solicit commerce for the benefit of the sender. This includes requests to sell and requests to purchase. In no case will this restriction apply to specific recommendations regarding the performance of hardware or software, or alerting the mailing list as a whole about particularly interesting pricing or equipment availability, as long as it is fairly clear that there is no connection between the author of the message and the merchant(s) under discussion.
- KLUG does NOT allow job postings on its mailing lists. The purpose of the lists is not to recruit experienced Linux users for paid positions.
- KLUG does NOT allow soliciting for employment on its mailing lists.
- KLUG does NOT allow abusive posts on its mailing lists.
The officers of KLUG and the KLUG mailing list operators shall be the sole judges of what constitutes advertising, solicitation or abuse. The advertising, job posting and abuse policies shall be enforced as follows:
- Private warning.
- Private reminder of the previous private warning.
- Future posts from the user will be moderated with the possibility of
the user being removed from the list.
