Printing from linux
I am printing from my workstation to an HP832C connetcted to my server. Samba is what I am using as
the printer server. When printing from windows, there are no problems. For the most part it prints
using the windows driver from windows98 just as if it were connected to the paralell port of the
computer running windows. The difficulties come when I print from linux.
To me this sounds like a problem stemming from lack of linux support for this printer. There is no
filter option which includes this printer in the print-tool. I am using the 550C/560C/6xxc filter
in the linux print tool. I can print from linux if it is text I am trying to print. So I can print
most of the stuff I want to. However I am trying to set up my fathers printers so he can print
photo images.(jpg's) If I open Gimp and try to print an image, it is awful. He uses Adobe
Photoshop alot and has the following printers: HP PhotoSmart photoprinter, HP Laserjet 4L and HP
Deskjet 722C. I'd like to get him to prefer the gimp over photoshp but without being able to print
high quality, it is difficult.
So what should I be trying? I've gone to HP's web site but failed to find linux printer filters.
Should I be sending from a linux workstation to linux server using nfs instead of samba? Is anyone
out there a frequent user of the Gimp who has overcome similar problems?
