auto date stamp in vi

Wow... this is my day for posting to the list!  Quiet sunday afternoons
are good for such things.  I really should be outside but I have
homework to do...

Anyway, I started a webcam (http://pacdemon.org/cam) and I'm going to
basically be keeping a log of events on the cam.  My text editor of
choice is vi (although I'm still a novice, I like it much better than
pico and it's way better than most gui text editors).

What I'd like to do it have vi automatically put the current date/time
at the top of the log file everytime I open it.  I remember doing
something like this in... notepad... I think that's what it was called. 
It ran on an obscure closed source operating system...

So, any vi guru's out there have any ideas?  I suppose I could
physically type the date everytime but this is the computer age!  Let
the machine do the tedious work...
