There is no need to uninstall gnome unless you need the disk space.
You can have multiple WM's loaded at once.

Assuming you are running Redhat, or some RPM based distribution,
you can install and uninstall packages with the "rpm" command.
Read the man page for options, or use the gnome/kde GUI interface
to RPM to do it easily.

There are a LOT of RPM files associated with gnome, so to truly
uninstall gnome, you should remove all of them.  I don't have a 
list, so I'll let you figure out which ones they are by reading 
the description in each RPM file.   :{)

If you want a small WM that's still easy to use, try XFCE.

It doesn't come standard with Redhat, but is an "extra" on 
BSware, or can be downloaded directly from www.xfce.org (~2MB).
