Silly modem problem

I have a 56K external USR modem that works great on one machine running
Red Hat 6.1. In fact, I am using it at this very moment to send this
e-mail. But as soon as I move it over to another box I have problems.
This other machine is also runnung RH 6.1. If I type 'at' I get no
response from the modem. However, if I type 'atdt' I get no textual
response but I can hear a dialtone through the modem speaker. I can even
have it dial a number and it will connect but I get no text printed on the
screen.

Like I said above, the same modem and cable work great on the machine I am
using now. I have tried both serial ports and they both behave the same.
I have the port I am using set to 3f8, IRQ 4 in the bios and setserial
confirms that.

One peculiar thing I did notice is that both the terminal ready and clear
to send lights are lit all the time when the modem is hooked up to the
problem machine. When it is hooked to the good machine only clear to send
is lit if the modem is not in use.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
