KALAMAZOO LINUX USER'S GROUP

MEMBERS AND GUESTS - COME JOIN US FOR A MEETING!!!

http://kalamazoolinux.org/meetings
We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7 PM.
Our meeting site is Room 4202 of Dunbar Hall on
the campus of Western Michigan University.

Tuesday  March 28, 2000
KLUG Meeting Notes - Summary
I.    PROJECT REPORTS
II.   GENERAL KLUG ANNOUNCEMENTS
III.  PRESENTATION RECAP

Chairperson:  Robert G. Brown

I.    PROJECT REPORTS

Linux or KLUG Related Project Reports -

EVERYONE COULD PARTICIPATE IN MEETING PRESENTATIONS
Put together a presentation of an area of Linux that
you have explored.  Won't others need to know what you
have learned?  We respect our free membership policy.
Think about that spirit of Linux and other open source
GPL software development.  Does open source mean free?
If you believe in the values of Richard Stallman's
Free Software Foundation, doesn't that mean a commitment
to quality and cooperation?  Talk your walk... ENJOY
SHARING YOUR PASSION FOR LINUX!  Doesn't our "free" have
a closer meaning to 'freedom to choose' rather than without
cost?  We do have some tough acts to follow regarding our
regular presenters.  They will be eager to tell you that
Linux is not JUST for the computer profession's elite!
It is here for us all.

If you have an idea for a KLUG presentation or know
of a good speaker, we want to hear about it!  Make
contact with our KLUG Program Director, Brenda Williams!
<nixb@iserv.net>

**********  REDHAT v6.2 HAS BEEN RELEASED  ************
This Linux distribution now comes on two (2) CD's.
Thanks Bruce!!!  See http://kalamazoolinux.org/bsware/
E-mail him in advance about your needs and pick up your
CD's at the next meeting.  <bruce@armintl.com>

Linux Clustering Project -
*** MEETING AT DIRK'S HOUSE MARCH 30th ***
An exploration will be made of configuring Linux boxes
with clustering software. Turbo Linux software was
distributed to six project members working with three
machines.  There is still time to join in!  Contact the
project coordinator for more info "Dirk Bartley"
<bartleyd2@net-link.net>  A SIG mailing list is being
considered to support this project's communication.

Boogie Cyber Cafe - A commercial Linux implementation.
Check out -  http://www.boogies.com/  A 22 hour outage
was experienced due to a dropped ISP link.  The problem
could be in a phone line or router.  KLUG began earning
a % of profits on 3/11/2000, payable on 3/31/2000. This
money will help fund KLUG Linux promotional activities.
The system remains stable. If you know of ANY games that
we could add, please contact a project team member.
Hardware upgrades planned for Boogies!!!  Memory, video
cards, and display monitors will all be upgraded.  Our
client is quite pleased with the project's performance.

West Michigan Polio Network Project - A project leader
will soon begin the process of making this project happen.
Shelved for a few months, but not forgotten.  Are there
any other project leaders willing to help out with this?
Contact <bob@acm.org> for more info.

West Michigan Search & Rescue - website is done.
Go there and see this KLUG public service project!
The site is ready for the next phase of development.
Contact Brenda Williams with questions or comments.

The Linux Video Outreach project continues in post
production at the Community Access Center. The tape
editing phase of this project is nearing completion.
"The Internet Demystified" is the title of this video.
Joe Freeman is preparing a 20 second 3D animation
of the KLUG logo for the Linux & the internet video
intro.

A farewell message from Andy Edison: 3/21/2000
I'd just like to thank everyone for the knowledge you
have provided and the fun that I have had at the
meetings. I will now have to relinquish my duties as
installmaster (not that I made a new users meeting
while in the position) because I am moving to Detroit
to take on a workstation support/administration
postion with my current company. I will now be the
KLUG representative to the Washtenaw user's group.
Thanks Again!!!       {{en:Good Luck Andy!}}

Diversified mailing lists are still in the planning stages.
If you have input about the structure or want to make
suggestions... Contact <bob@acm.org> for more info.

Tax Deductible Status - The 501c3 application was sent
to the IRS in December.  We have received notice that
they are proceeding with the processing of our request.
We hope to hear from them soon with notice of our charitable
deductibility.  Charitable and tax-exemption status is
routinely granted to educational not-for-profit organizations.
This should help us attain our financial goals.  We need
working capital for increased Linux promotional activities.

* Must come to three meetings to qualify as full member.

III.  PRESENTATION RECAP

Tonight's KLUG Presentation:
*****************************************************
-  PAM & NSS
   by Adam Williams

Almost everything you wanted to know about Linux network
administration tools, but had been afraid to ask. The "shadowed
password file stalkers" were discouraged by this presentation.
These definitions add perspective to Adam's discussion.
You'll want to see his notes as these are a bit outdated.

Pluggable Authentication Module
<security> (PAM) The new industry standard integrated login
framework. PAM is used by system entry components, such as
the Common Desktop Environment's dtlogin, to authenticate
users logging into a Unix system. It provides pluggability
for a variety of system-entry services. PAM's ability to stack
authentication modules can be used to integrate login with
different authentication mechanisms such as RSA, DCE and
Kerberos, and thus unify login mechanisms. PAM can also
integrate smart card authentication.

White paper.
[OSF-RFC 86.0 V. Samar, R. Schemers, "Unified Login with
Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM)", Oct 1995].

...and Name Service Switching (NSS) as it relates to:
Domain Name System
<networking> (DNS) A general-purpose distributed, replicated,
data query service chiefly used on Internet for translating
hostnames into Internet addresses. Also, the style of hostname
used on the Internet, though such a name is properly called a
fully qualified domain name. DNS can be configured to use a
sequence of name servers, based on the domains in the name being
looked for, until a match is found.

The name resolution client (e.g. Unix's gethostbyname() library
function) can be configured to search for host information in the
following order: first in the local /etc/hosts file, second in
NIS and third in DNS. This sequencing of Naming Services is
sometimes called "name service switching". Under Solaris is
configured in the file /etc/nsswitch.conf.

DNS can be queried interactively using the command nslookup.
It is defined in STD 13, RFC 1034 and RFC 1035.

Domain Name System: BIND is a common DNS server.
Info from Virtual Office, Inc..
(1997-12-15)

We will be searching for this one on the "Past
Presentations" page as a reference when we are
working with these network administration tools!

YOU HAVE TO COME TO A MEETING TO GET THE REAL GOOD STUFF!!!
There was an assortment of delights from Sweetwater's and
fortifying vitamin enriched milk served after the meeting!
