The logical partition must rest on an extended partition. Extended 
partitions are the "equals" of primary partitions, i.e., you can only 
have four per HD due to PC BIOS limitations. (That is right, isn't it?) Any 
number may be extended or primary, but remember dos must boot from a primary, 
and you must have at least primary for your computer to think it can boot. 
Once dos is booted it cannot see other primary parts. Linux does not care 
if it is on a primary partition and can i/o with other OS's primaries.

I'm not sure I ever had a HD large enough to warrant multiple logicals 
on an ext. part while I was running dos. (I was very poor.... no, wait! 
I still am!)

If that large extended dos partition was created by a Linux fdisk, cfdisk 
or Disk Druid dos will recognize it as of foreign origin and refuse to 
touch it. Same with a smaller logical part.
