I would consider the word 'prevent' as a rather sideways perspective on it.
What I have noticed is that it does avoid a 'total crash' more often than not -
but that when it does in fact crash, it just avoids the blue screen all
together and either freezes up cold, goes black or just reboots itself without
notice.
I have also noticed that when programs themselves crash, it goes into some
'debug mode' death spiral, usually returning to allow you to continue to
operate but MAJORLY hogging up memory and temp space to do some sort of
'snapshot' debug dump of the dying program. Presumably, if you allowed the
system to absolutely gorge itself on resources (memory, fast drives, tons of
disk space, etc) it would not be as debilitating, but on my 64Meg system, you
might as well go take a bathroom brake, then have a smoke -- if you have an
S.O., perhaps have sex... three times even (then have another smoke), read the
newspaper (from every major U.S. city), go to the store (in Brisbane, Australia
... via rowboat), read War and Peace (twice) and recite the phone book
backwards and it will be about half way done with its dump when you return.

They definately dropped a lot of backward compatibility - they also are lending
no support to 'orphaned technologies' - i.e. if you bought any devices that are
either now no longer supported by the manufacturer and/or the manufacturer('s
product line) has been sold or gone out of business, sorry - no support on NT5.

I still prefer the - 'take winblows CD to nearest state game area - load
shotgun - yell pull - shoot!!! Go home - install linux - relax' - method

on another side note, does anyone know if the AOL/Netscape alliance thing is
giving up on their support of javascript as a Mozilla originated language? I
tried typing 'javascript:' by itself into the Netscape 6 release window - nada
- no javascript console (at least not that way) anymore. Also, I didn't see
anything in their preferences in support of the roaming (LDAP) either. Is that
considered a 'work in progress' release? Or is this a WYSIWYG of the new
netscape?
