Yes, it does finish happily.
libc-2.0.7.so
libc-so.5.4.46
libg++-2-libc6.0-1-2.8.2.so
libg++.so.2.7.2.8

Hell, even I can use an "-O" switch. :) The kernel, 2.0.38, is i586
optimized and hasn't a hiccup (if I read the compiler msgs aright).

Sadly, I have no money to spare (taxes, glasses, dentist) and won't for few
weeks, by which time I shall probably be rather hungry. :) Just kidding.
Nah, truly, I prefer the console to X for most things, though I've seen
Enlightenment desktops that make my--ah, mouth water: yeah, mouth water. :)
Actually, I replaced Red Hat with Debian on this box. From what I've read of
the FSSTND since, Debian has it over Red Hat in directory structure and file
placement. And to the naked ls -i, everything looks a bit more structured.
The real quirk of Debian is simply the ideology. Things you take totally for
granted are NOT standard on a Debian box. Exim is installed rather than
sendmail because exim is GPL'ed and sendmail is still Berkeley software, NOT
because exim is easier or more full-featured than sendmail. On the other
hand, what is on a Debian box works great. And as I noted before, I like
quixotic causes. :)
It's just that with a 2.2 kernel, I would just slam Mozilla on here. Or, I
could point apt-get to woody-frozen and d/l the new OS. OR, actually, said
the Scarecrow, if I had a brain I'd go to Ian's and use his lovely ISDN line
and just burn a woody-frozen CD....
