Yes, you can connect to NIC's directly to each other with a SPECIAL 
crossover cable.  The standard network cable will not work.  I've 
also seen little adapters that plug into the end of a standard cable 
to perform the switch.

Personally I run both IP Masquerading and the Squid Proxy Server.

I find Squid faster than IP-Masq. for web browsing, and IP-Masq.
is still needed for other protocols (real player, telnet, IRC, ...)
