Re: Computer sharing problems

I recommend a similar lashup. but with 2 dedicated machines. basically, I'd
find a closet in which a 386 lies dormant. then I"d put Linux on that and
make it my gateway/proxyserver w/ IP Masq then I'd tell sister to pony up a
few bucks for parts you can use to build a dedicated ICQ machine for her. if
you go command-line Linux, the ICQ box shouldn't be too expensive, maybe
another surplus 486, idunno. i know that QNX had a single-disk demo
consisting of a full QNX OS plus a browser. It was pretty impressive, but if
your sister's chatting could be satisfied with a single boot floppy system,
you could be talking some seriously light-weight hardware needs.

pity the i-opener folks are such jerks. you could get one of those for $99
and go from there. you know, if you're willing to hardware-hack, that could
be fun. get the closet machine to serve as a gateway, and then use the
i-opener as a dumb terminal that boots off your main linux box.
theoretically possible, but a difficult hack.
