Re: Proxy server

have I made my customary plug for Coyote Linux in the last five minutes?
http://www.coyotelinux.com/

it's a distro based upon the Linux Router Project, designed to be
super-simple at setting up an IP-masq server. works best for cable modems,
but I think they've got a demand dialing PPP connection available now.

no, i don't have any financial connection with Coyote Linux, just a
satisfied customer.

if you're a windows weenie, you can give him money ($50) for a CD-ROM
that'll invoke a wizard on your Windoze box, ask you some questions, and
then build a boot floppy for your router. if you have a working Linux box
and you're not afraid of shell scripts and a command line, you can ftp the
freebie version that I use.

my router runs on the following hardware:

486/33
32mb ram
2 ethernet cards (one to my network, other to cable modem)
3.5" floppy drive
chassis and power supply
b/w monitor & keyboard

I literally built the router out of stuff in my junk box. I'll bet a quarter
that a sufficiently motivated person could dig an equivalent machine out of
an office building's dumpster (if his timing was good) or pick one up at a
garage sale for $10. (Well maybe the garage sale folks would want more for
the monitor.)

The only critical components in your router are the ethernet cards. If I
didn't already have them in my junk box, I'd suggest you start with the
Linux distro you'll use for the router (LRP, tomsb, Coyote) and make a list
of the cards it supports.

If you go this route and you find your junk-box is inadequate, lemme know
what parts you need & I'll tell you what I got.

smiles and cheers,

steve
