At first i thought

print. Any ideas

No, but have you tried an lpq command on the queue to
see if it gives you a status message? Also the first
thing I do on any system is to change
/etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd so it starts "lpd -l" instead of
"lpd" so that lpd sends messages to syslogd about what
it is doing (which makes things a very little less
baffling). Someday I hope lpd with DIE! DIE! DIE! and
be replaced with something drastically more robust.
