Personally, I fight spam the same way I used to fight dandelions, by
pulling the thing out by the roots. Whenever I get SPAM, I traceroute it
back, based in information in the header, and report the spammer to the
ISP (and sometimes the ISP's ISP). Very often I have received notes stating
that the spammer's account has been discontinued. I used to get as many
as 15 such messages a day... now I'm down to about 1 per WEEK. It is worth
taking the couple of minutes per message needed to nail these people.
To me, filters are like mowing the lawn to get rid of dandelions. Oh, it
might look OK for that cookout you're having tonight, but wait a couple of
days and see what happens... they'll be back!
There are some tools available if you want to turn table on spammer and
become the hunter instead of the hunted. See http://www.abuse.net for
information, tools, and related links.
