III. PRESENTATION RECAP
TONIGHT'S KLUG PRESENTATION:
*****************************************************
- INTRODUCTION TO LINUX
by Bruce Smith, Computer Systems Administrator, Network
Administrator, and Systems Analyst/Programmer at
Armstrong International Inc. in Three Rivers, MI
AN OVERVIEW OF BASIC LINUX OPERATIONS WAS PRESENTED.
Bruce showed us the things that new Linux users need to
know for basic operations after the installation of
their choice of distributions. This presentation
offers everyone a starting place with Linux. The
origins of Linux and the spirit of the GPL were
described. Remember to install ALL available docs
and 'man' pages. You'll be glad you did!
ONE LINUX INSTALLATION was in process during the meeting.
It was an attempted install on a laptop with either a
floppy or a CD-ROM device, but not with both available
at once. Couldn't use the floppy for the boot disk
or the CD-ROM as a bootable device on this laptop...
Bob said "there are other ways to accomplish the install."
Several options are being considered.
THE BEGINNER'S MEETING is the first Tuesday of each month.

IV. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING - TUESDAY 7:00PM 05-09-2000
High Availability Project: Linux Clustering
Presented by: "Dirk Bartley" <bartleyd2@net-link.net>
Join us on Tuesday, May 9th, for an update to the High
Availability project started approximately two months ago.
You will see a group of 5 computers; all running Apache on
Linux; two of which have Turbolinux's Turbo Cluster Server
installed. These two servers running Turbocluster will have
the Advanced Traffic managing daemon running routing requests
for http service to the various nodes on the cluster. This
presentation will be a demonstration of this clustering method
as well as an explanation of the procedure required to set up
the computers to perform services providing failover and
increase traffic capacity.
Dirk Graduated in 1991 from Western Michigan University
with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Currently employed
as an engineer at Koolant Koolers where he designs industrial
refrigeration equipment. Along with his engineering duties,
Dirk also spends about ¼ of his time engaging in maintenance
and upgrades of the company's network, which runs Windows NT
and SCO Unix operating systems.
