III.  PRESENTATION RECAP

TONIGHT'S KLUG PRESENTATION:
*****************************************************

Using LDAP: OpenLDAP, a GNU LDAP (directory) server
Presented by "Adam Williams" <awilliam@whitemice.org>

Directory enabling networks is the next step in the
evolution of large networks. Directories allow the
centralization of configuration and security information
as well as being key to high availability. LDAP
(Lightweight directory access protocol) is an open
standard by which applications can interact with
directories, supported by everything from M$-Outlook
and Active Directory to Novel NDS and the Linux OS.
But how directories work and how to construct one is
still a rather mysterious process, and the documentation
is scattered across the Internet. Adam dispelled some
(not all) of the mystery and explained basic directory
concepts.

Look for Adam's outstanding LDAP presentation on the
"Past Presentation" page. Very well done work Adam!!!
http://www.kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/20000530/
He introduced OpenLDAP, a GNU LDAP (directory) server.
Check out - http://www.openldap.org
Two books were recommended:
LDAP Programming: Directory Enabled Applications with
LDAP - Howes & Smith
Understanding and Deploying LDAP Directory Services
- Howes, Smith, & Good

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids.
The network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a
couple of hundred workstations, running Linux and other
operating systems. Not only does he deal with domain
issues at work, but he is also the owner of the domain
"whitemice.org". Recently married and ensconced as a
KLUG officer (independent events), Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing
list, both presenting and solving some of the most
challenging networking and configuration problems.

ADDITIONAL LDAP DEFINITION:
<protocol> (LDAP) A protocol for accessing on-line
directory services. LDAP was defined by the IETF in
order to encourage adoption of X.500 directories. The
Directory Access Protocol (DAP) was seen as too complex
for simple internet clients to use. LDAP defines a
relatively simple protocol for updating and searching
directories running over TCP/IP.

LDAP is gaining support from vendors such as Netscape,
Novell, Sun, HP, IBM/Lotus, SGI, AT&T, and Banyan

An LDAP directory entry is a collection of attributes
with a name, called a distinguished name (DN). The DN
refers to the entry unambiguously. Each of the entry's
attributes has a type and one or more values. The types
are typically mnemonic strings, like "cn" for common
name, or "mail" for e-mail address. The values depend
on the type. For example, a mail attribute might contain
the value "babs@umich.edu". A jpegPhoto attribute would
contain a photograph in binary JPEG/JFIF format.

LDAP directory entries are arranged in a hierarchical
structure that reflects political, geographic, and/or
organisational boundaries. Entries representing countries
appear at the top of the tree. Below them are entries
representing states or national organisations. Below
them might be entries representing people, organisational
units, printers, documents, or just about anything else.

RFC 1777, RFC 1778, RFC 1959, RFC 1960, RFC 1823.

*****************************************************

Beginner's Meeting
Presented by "Robert G. Brown" <bob@acm.org>

This meeting is intended for those who are curious
about Linux, or want some help getting started.
Tonight, join us as Bob takes the mystery out of PPP
by showing us a tool, KPPP to get the job done! Bring
your computer to the meeting, and have Linux installed
on it, at no charge. You can also bring home your own
Linux CD-ROM , produced locally. You can also come and
listen to our new user presentation, and have your
questions answered about Linux, for home or business.

If you are planning on bringing a computer for installation
to this meeting please fill out the install form to make
arrangements. Installations are done by appointment ONLY.
You must fill out this form one week prior to the meeting
if you want to bring in your computer. Thank you for your
cooperation. Feel free to contact our install master with
any questions.

Now's the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.

Robert G. Brown is the Chairperson of KLUG and an
independent programmer/consultant working with various
clients. He is a vigorous advocate of Linux and the
GPL concept. He is also recognized as an expert in his
profession. His presentations are informative and
focused. A team effort is what he will acknowledge
(IHHO) and we are fortunate to enjoy his dedication.
