Linux on Laptop: Success!
Hi there,
I finally have Linux running on my laptop with only 8 MB! I gave up on Red
Hat 6.x because of the low memory. I tried 5.2 many times via NFS, and
almost succeeded. It's like it kept using the floppy disk for swap space
though. I even contemplated an old Slackware CD I had (1.x kernel) but
realized I didn't have enough floppy disks. :)
Anyways, I finally tried Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 Desktop and it gave me the
opportunity to activate the swap partition on the hard drive before
starting the install. The install went very smooth after that. I really
only wanted to get text mode running, but it looks like X starts up too.
Kinda slow, but it runs.
Thanks for all the suggestions. It was all very useful. I'll get around to
buying more RAM in a few weeks, but right now the money is being allocated
to other things...like buying food and house payments. :)
