I'm having a hard time getting my dial-up
connection working with any consistency. Basically, I get connected and
the modem reports about 31kb/s - not unreasonable. This seems fine for
some things, like surfing the net, but when things go badly is when I try to
download something that is not just a short burst (like a web page or small web
graphics.) Typically, with a file about 200k, this is what happens
(downloading using Netscape/FTP program/that KDE
browser/Anything...)
- The download begins. Very
snappy.
- After about 60-80k, the connection falters and
poops out. The download stalls and doesn't start up again no matter how
long I wait.
- In the meantime, I can still hit other
(non-cached) pages and even see (using kpppload) that the overall connection is
working fine. Just that 'stream' died.
Here's what I'm working with...
- RedHat 6.1 (almost fresh - very standard
installation, I think)
- USR external FaxModem (not WinModem)
- KDE 1.1.2
- KPPP 1.1.6
Here's a kicker... I can dual boot to Windows
on the same computer and it works great. No hiccups or stalls or
anything.
I've tried to narrow down the problem by
eliminating certain things. Here's what I've tried:
- About a million things in
/etc/ppp/options
- Another modem. Same problem.
- All sorts of modem init strings.
- Keep looking at ifconfig - The ERRORS tally
climbs pretty fast when the hiccups happen!
- Various changes using setserial
So this seems to me, like it's got to be a problem
with the serial port or modem initialization problem, right? I'm not
within reach of that computer at the moment, but if you think it'd help to have
the output of ifconfig or setserial or anything else, please let me know.
I'd LOVE to finally let that rotten Windows partition go and only use Linux at
home, but this is stopping me for sure.
Thanks very much - sorry this note got so
long!
