III. PRESENTATION RECAP
TONIGHT'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (26 participants tonight)
******************************************************
PHP and Linux (server-side scripting) & P I Z Z A
Presented by Tony Gettig
This was the fun kickoff meeting of the PHP Special
Interest Group of KLUG! What is PHP? It's an open source
scripting language used on many dynamic content websites.
It is also used to connect surfers with backend databases.
But hey, you don't have to be a programmer to enjoy this
meeting! There was FREE pizza & pop for all who attend!
Tony's humor and excitement made this presentation a blast!
http://www.php.net/ <-- Check this site for more info!
Tony's presentation was divided into four parts.
What is PHP?
What can I do with PHP?
What does a PHP script look like?
Where can I get more info?

Looking for a PHP supporting host service?
Check out http://www.he.net ($5 month)
Did you know that Caldera can auto install
Apache, PHP, and MySQL? Redhat v6.2 needed
only two lines changed in three files to get
PHP configured with Apache.
We heard descriptions of individual PHP application
experiences from Adam Williams, Robert G. Brown,
Bill Katsma, and Tony Gettig. Many in the group had
great insights to share. Implementation of database
"front ends" seemed to be the most popular use.
We heard about "PHP form wizards," discussed MySQL
vs. PostgreSQL, and saw a list of sites that employ
PHP. Seemed funny to see the MS Visual Basic site
done using PHP instead of VB. "Record level locking"
or "quick and easy" were the two main arguments offered
in the "Linux SQL database war!" Great to have such
a diversity of tools available. We can use them both!
PHP SIG Goals:
Establish support mailing list.
Hold monthly SIG meetings.
Cooperate on a group PHP project.
Tony Gettig is a self-employed computer consultant serving
clients throughout Southwest Michigan. He is a Novell CNE,
has dealt with more than a fair share of Microsoft operating
systems, and is an avid Linux advocate for both home and
corporate use. When he's not consulting, Tony enjoys spending
time with his family, spinning CD's on a Kalamazoo radio
station, and playing punk-pop music in a band.
IV. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING - TUESDAY 7:00PM 06-20-2000
*****************************************************
WEBMIN "web based Linux configuration & admin package"
Presented by Richard Zimmerman
Tuesday, we will learn about Webmin - A web based
Configuration & Administration utility for Linux.
If you are a newbie to Linux, then you know that
the array of options, configuration files & system
administration on Linux can be overwhelming. Tonight
we look at one of the 3rd party options available to
help the newcomer as well as the seasoned veteran
of Linux Webmin is a web based configuration &
administration package available for RedHat and other
distributions of Linux. This discussion will help you
with the installation & configuration of Webmin. We
will also explore some of the strengths & weaknesses
of web based configuration.
Richard Zimmerman is the Information Systems guru for
K&B Transport in Elkhart, Indiana. Between his duties
of programming, network admin, PC support & many other
tasks for several offices, he still finds time to help
maintain the KLUG links web page. He even manages to
find time to continue his learning experiences of
Linux in his spare time! (www.kalamazoolinux.org/links)
