Re: ethernet: can't ping localhost or send responses..
I had the same problem as you at one point...but i recently got some help
and now i'm up and runing windows SE as a gateway and linux right behind it.
Let me show you how i have this set up perhaps this could help
This is from my linux box.

I've used: ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2
And: route add default gw 192.168.0.1
and thus getting me onto the net and searching around for bigger fish to fry
