Bruce - you nailed it. I downloaded irqtune,
read a bit of the README and had the modem working much better in about five
minutes.
I still get errors (shown by ifconfig) at the rate
of 5 or 10 per minute, but they don't kill the 'stream', at least. The
throughput seems a bit low, also (perhaps as a direct result of all the extra
work correcting errors), but I think I will work with the init string to make
sure compression is enabled, v.90 is being used, etc.
