This all depends on the modem. Some record statistics that you can see with
something like "at&v" that lists all the S registers, it should say something
about that in your manual. A low-tech way is to set the speaker always on and
with a high volume, and listed to how many times (if ever) the tone leaves the
"white-noise" range and sounds more like the initial negotiation tones. That
isn't real reliable (some modems can re-train very quickly, and it will never
get to the stage that you can hear), but sometimes you'll be suprised. I run my
modem in a closet, and if things seem really poky or flaky I just stick my head
in.
