Typing the "Max..." error message into deja's power search (limited
to *linux* newsgroups) turns up some talk about it.
One thread says you're running out of PTY's. It's a kernel compile
option and defaults to 256 (not sure about Redhat's kernel setting).
Another thread talks about a bug in KDE spawning too many "kioslave"
processes (look for KDE processes with the "ps" command) and they are
using up your PTY's.
It seems to be related to KDE since I don't see the problem with
XFCE and I started over 72 xterm windows without any problem on a
remote and local display both.
