III. PRESENTATION RECAP
TONIGHT'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (23 participants tonight)
******************************************************
VMware - Running Multiple Operating System's Concurrently.
Presented by Bruce Smith
http://www.vmware.com
This presentation was fun and well organized! You could tell
that Bruce really likes the functionality that VMware offers him.
"VMware, when you absolutely, positively need to run a Windows
application and the thought of rebooting out of Linux makes you
want to puke!!! :{)"
VMware is a commercial application that will let you run more than
one operating system at one time. Bruce had both Windows 95 and
Windows NT running under Linux with VMware and demonstrated
Windows 95 in a VMware window under Redhat Linux on his laptop
during his presentation. He demo'd Win95 in full screen mode.
The presentation included information about installing VMware
and a guest operating system on a PC running Linux. Bruce did
a live install of MS NT v4.0 Workstation in less than 10 minutes
(he did not install the network options) without errors. Ever
see a fast NT installation that was error free? NOPE! :)
Bruce used his Gateway laptop with 128 Mb of RAM to do live
operations with a projected display. We saw the real deal!
The presentation outline included:
I. How VMware works! Running Windows applications on Linux!
Virtual Machine concept - system within a system
A. Runs on NT or Linux host OS. (not hosted by 95/98)
B. Uses Intel VM CPU architecture *
C. Module compiling, virtual hardware, virtual network
* Virtual 86 mode <processor, programming>
(Or "virtual mode" or "virtual 8086 mode")
An operating mode provided by the Intel 80386 and later
processors to allow real mode programs to run under operating
systems which use protected mode. In this sub-mode of protected
mode, an operating environment is created which mimics the
address calculation in real mode. {Definition from FOLDOC}
http://www.instantweb.com/foldoc/foldoc.cgi?virtual+86+mode
II. Installation of RPM or tar file. License discussed.
III. Configuration Wizard for DOS, Win v3.1/95/98/NT/2000
Linux/Free BSD/Other
IV. Video Drivers
A. VMware uses the host OS video settings
B. Resizing
V. Takes lots of RAM memory
A. 64 Mb RAM reserved for NT install on VM.
B. Reserved 500 Mb of hard drive space.
Not free... $299 for commercial version and $99 for the
student/hobby version. Trial versions are downloadable.
WHAT VMware SAYS ABOUT THEMSELVES:
VMware delivers a flexible and safe computing environment
by providing multiple virtual computers on a single PC.
VMware is a solution for:
- Windows with Linux
- Developers
- Technical Support
- Quality Assurance
- Web Developers
Hmmm Dept... was this the first time a MS Windows NT v4.0
install was done by a LUG? Wonder if the NT group in GR
would have installed VMware over NT and demo'd a Linux
install? Is it anomolies like this that keeps life so
interesting? Thanks for this great presentation Bruce!!!
Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer for
Armstrong International Inc. where he is responsible for a HP-UX
network of Servers, Workstations, printers and X-Terminals spanning
five buildings in Three Rivers. Bruce has a degree in Computer Science
and Mathematics from Central Michigan University. (go Chips! :) Bruce
runs Linux, almost exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and
runs a lot of Armstrong's networking services on Linux!
