This may be because your hard drive isn't set up quite right in BIOS.

Go in to the BIOS setup and see what it looks like.  If LBA mode is
turned off, turn it on... just sort of play.  You shouldn't hurt
anything and you can always change it back.

You might also want to cheat and do an upgrade install over your current
install.  This is a quick and dirty method and it may reinstall/refresh
lilo and the MBR.
