Yes...I can play mp3's with no problem

Yes...I dual boot this machine and windows has no problems playing cd's.

yes
ls -al /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Feb 11 16:03 /dev/cdrom -> hdd
cdrom is secondary slave
Cdplay ,and a few other apps I've tried, don't recognize music cd's at all.
They respond as if the cdrom drive is empty.
