Well, to let regular users mount the cdrom all you need to do is add the "user"
option to the cdrom line in /etc/fstab

As for your root problem...  ???

Trying typing "su -" instead of su root.  Also, did you log out completely (hit
CTRL-ALT-F1 to get toa  command line login)?  Trying logging in from the command
line.
