First make sure you can "startx" from a textual command line.
Make sure you have an entry in your inittab like:
	x:5:respawn:/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon
Make sure your default run level is 5:
	id:5:initdefault:
Do an "init q;init 5"

When init has a problem starting something it should log a message to the first
virtual console.
