WEST MICHIGAN POLIO NETWORK WEB SITE - The site development
is heading into the final stages. Mike Sams is the WMPN web
project leader working on this info site. Nick Kissinger is
working on the team too. WMPN has asked us to assist them in
getting their info published for public use and good. The

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - The 501c3 application was sent
to the IRS in December. We have received notice that
they are proceeding with the processing of our request.
We hope to hear from them soon with notice of our charitable
deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption status is

This should help us attain our financial goals. We need
working capital for increased Linux promotional activities.

III. PRESENTATION RECAP

TONIGHT'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (11 active participants tonight)
******************************************************
TIMBER!!!
By Adam Williams

The graphics hinted at heavy tree growth! Forest green was the
color of Adam's presentation slides... are his logs termite bait?
He did a professional job of keeping us involved. He took extra
interest in the many questions that were opened for discussion.

One of the most useful tools in securing and troubleshooting
a UNIX/Linux system are the logs. Adam covered how syslog,
the messaging daemon, manages your log messages and
how to create automated responses to specific messages.

Logs are text files with the format of:
date stamp	host name	message
WHEN	WHERE	WHY

The two logging programs are:
klogd - Kernel log - boot listing
syslogd - system event recording

dmesg = print or control the kernel ring buffer
dmesg -c = clears log file, restarts

We heard how "MARK" is used to determine server
halt times. A "MARK" is sent to verify active messaging
into the log... when it disappears is the time the server
went offline.

TIP: You can have all the machines in your network log to one
workstation! This allows you to focus on one location to look for
any remote problems.

TIP: You must create the files for syslogd to send messages to!

We heard about etc/syslog.conf and logrotate.conf <cron job>

We also covered the log files of common applications such as
Samba and HTTP. Apache and squid logs require that the truncated
swapping of files setting be used <<not in docs>> on active servers!
Better check this out with Adam... sounded scary!

There is a shell command "logger" that sends messages to
the log files.

Adam expanded on this info by David Tansley
{a systems administrator with a Lloyds of London}

man dmesg man logrotate man syslogd
man logger man syslog man klogd

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but
the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple
of hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating
Systems. Not only does he deal with domain issues at work,
but he is also the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Recently
married and ensconced as a KLUG officer (independent events),
Adam has been a regular contributor to technical discussions on
our main mailing list, both presenting and solving some of the
most challenging networking and configuration problems.
