Let me get this straight, you have an RS-232 serial port in your 
apartment?
And there is a terminal server or UNIX box on the other end?  I hope they
realize the consquences of someone sticking the bare end of an extension
cord in there.

Anyway, if all the above assumptions are true....  You get a "login:"
prompt if you point something like minicom (serial terminal emulator)
are the port?  I'm a little confused by "using the terminal window to
telnet"?   Did you issue a telnet command at a router/terminal server
prompt?  If so any idea what make of router (Xyplex, Cisco, ....). Or
do you think it's an actual UNIX box?  I don't no anything about the 
WMU network, but I've done this kind of thing lots of times.
