I do not think (I'm on the Samba devel list) that the Samba team will
"take on" AD. The developers have "promised" the next production
release of Samba will have full LDAP support (currently you have to use
HEAD or TNG). Since the big push in Samba is for Samba to be the PDC
bieng a client to AD is not so hot a topic, but since AD has an LDAP
gateway (don't know if it's additional $$$ or not) LDAP support in
Samba should solve the problems boths ways. Now if M$ had just used
LDAP in the first place.....

I don't get it either. I had my OpenLDAP enabled network rolling out
quite awhile before AD finally shipped. I think it is because there
are a lot of committedly M$-only shops. Caterpillar (for which we are
a dealer) is one, EVERYTHING is M$, and non-M$ solutions are not
even seriously considered. Outlook, exchange, etc.... So things like
LDAP or NDS are just off their radar.

I'd have paid $.05 for the pleasure of hearing it.
