Re: Null Modem(WMU Apt. connection)

I have been using a WMU apartment connection (the 'null modem')
in Linux for three years now. I used to send email to this
list a while back, and it took some major explanation. Many
people are not cognizent of the fact that a PPP connection
can be established without use of a modem! In the WMU apartments,
we do *NOT* have Ethernet, and we are *NOT* using *any* sort
of modems. We have a lovely little device that pops on our 'puters,
and via CAT-5 cable, we establish a PPP connection.

I am running SuSE 6.3. Rest assured, no matter *what version
of Linux you are using, the PPP connection is a bit different*.
This has been a major thorn in my side. I have been trying
to write various scripts for Technical Computing Services
on WMU's campus (I used to work for them) when using Linux
and FreeBSD. However, so many versions (kernel releases, new
PPP dialers, etc.) are present that I simply cannot keep up.

KPPP does *not* work well through the WMU Apartments. However,
I *can* send you a simple dial-up script that I use. I can
do my very best to help you out. As I said, every version requires
different options to be set, et cetera, so finding the *precise*
settings can take time. I've done this through SuSE, Redhat,
Slackware, and Caldera. Takes time to figure out all of what
the settings are, but eventually, we get it workin'!

Please do email me directly if you *ever* need any WMU PPP connection
assistance (from WMU apartments). I also am giving permission
to anyone else who wants to contact me and needs assistance
using Linux via the WMU Apartments connections. I'll get ya up
and running via PPP; just buy me two ice-cold Diet Dr. Peppers,
and I'll even come over and walk ya through it!

Send any inquiries you have to me, hoagy@yakko.cs.wmich.edu
I'll be very glad to help.

>>Matt<<

p.s. Again, *do not use KPPP or any other 'dialer' program*. I
use '/etc/ppp/ppp-up' dialer script, and /etc/ppp/ppp-down from
a root prompt (or sudo). Works like a friggin' charm!
