BOOGIE CYBER CAFE - KLUG's public commercial Linux project.
There may be an update of the Linux distribution here soon.
Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.
Check out -  http://www.boogies.com/ Site by Matt Crampton!
This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure.  This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities.  Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day.  The network support for Boogie has been
taken over by the extremely skilled and intuitive KLUG members
Peter Buxton and Ian Schirado.  The hard drive in Station 2 will
SOON be replaced and mounted on the wall possibly!  Hardware
failure happens to everyone. The Linux OS STILL remains cool,
calm, and constant!
Expect exciting developments here soon!
WE NEED A NEW WEBMASTER FOR THE BOOGIE PROJECT!
Great opportunity to publicly showcase your web presentation skills.

CHECK OUT THE NEW KLUG LIBRARY PAGE -  See the updated
inventory listing of our KLUG Library. The items listed in
green are only available to KLUG supporting members.
Everything else is available to anyone that can come to a
KLUG meeting. If you would like to check out one of these
items, please check it off and submit the form on the KLUG
library page.   We are sharing these next two items as an F-Y-I !

III.  PRESENTATION RECAP

TONIGHT'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (14 active participants tonight)
****************************************************************
A Primer on Securing Linux!
by Bruce Smith
{Standard Disclaimers Invoked}

ALL OF THE LINKS FROM TONIGHT'S PRESENTATION
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/20000912/

Why do people hack?  The ports and their services were
considered!  Manual tweaks, security scripts, and floppy
firewalls were the focus.  Bulgarians... Port Scanners...
Social Engineering...  65,000 ports...  default security...
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ or http://www.nmap.org

In this day of fast home internet connections, like DSL and
cable modems, it is very convenient to keep a Linux box
connected to the internet for long periods of time.  This can
be a potential security risk for home users since a lot of
Linux distributions do not install with the most secure
configuration by default.

Bruce talked about what you can do to make your home
Linux system more secure on the internet.  We looked at some
of the tools available to aid a new Linux user in making their
system secure without having to know the low level details
of creating a dedicated firewall.  We discussed which services
are safe to run over the internet, and which are not.  We also
examined ways to make unsafe services more secure by creating
an encrypted tunnel for these protocols.

Bruce's Security Presentation Outline (You Should Have Been Here!!!)
This was an outstanding presentation of Linux security considerations!

·       Redhat specific
·       ·       Redhat mailing lists.
·       ·       Redhat kernel update procedure.
·       Security setup scripts
·       ·       Bastille Linux
·       ·       PM Firewall - frontend to IPchains
·       Encryption
·       ·       SSH
·       ·       OpenSSH
·       ·       stunnel - for encrypted SSL connections
·       Floppy Firewalls
·       ·       FREE ciSCO.
·       ·       floppyfw
·       ·       Coyote Linux
·       ·       Gibraltar
·       ·       Freshmeat - search for "floppy firewall"

·       ·       Openwall project
·       ·       Security Focus

Bruce recommends reading O'Reilly's "Building Internet Firewalls"
It is a very good resource for building dedicated firewall security.

Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer
for Armstrong International Inc. where he is responsible for a
HP-UX network of Servers, Workstations, printers and X-Terminals
spanning five buildings in Three Rivers.  Bruce has a degree in
Computer Science and Mathematics from Central Michigan
University. (go Chips! :) Bruce runs Linux, almost exclusively,
on all his PC's at work and home, and runs a lot of Armstrong's
networking services on Linux!

IV.   NEXT WEEK'S MEETING - TUESDAY 09/19/2000
***********************************************************************
The Linux Desktop of the Future
by Glenn Jacobson

In this presentation, Glenn will walk us through a compelling
business case for Open Source development in general, Linux
in particular, and preferred architectures, to be specific.

We'll go over why Linux has the characteristics desired
for developing desktop applications, and then detail why thin
clients will become more common as the software and other
aspects of the environment evolve.

This presentation is rounded out by case studies developed in a
law office and manufacturing company, showing how all of these
technologies are deployed effectively.

SPEAKER INFO - http://www.uniqsys.com/contact/index.html
Glenn has been in the computer services business for 34 years.
He is a 1964 graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Go Badgers)
and a big fan of Big Ten football and basketball.   He is the CEO
and founder of Unique Systems (USI). Prior to forming USI in 1990,
Glenn held positions in programming, systems design and
management. USI was started as a custom database accounting
software firm, to follow in the footsteps he'd formed earlier in his
career to bring quality computer software services to business.
Based on his experience USI was started as a firm that uses SQL
database accounting software that runs on UNIX. Thus in 1995 when
Linux became available as a turnkey Internet server, it provided all
the basic components he looked for in a computing product to enter
into the new Internet/Intranet arena. After five years of experience
working with Linux, USI has had phenomenal success. Glenn has
many examples to relate why he feels that Linux represents the
future of computing.

More information about Glenn and Unique Systems can be obtained
at their web site, http://www.uniqsys.com
