One thing to check is your DNS.  I think imap wants to do a reverse
lookup to get the hostname of the client.  If DNS is "broken" it
might stall till that lookup times out.

Also how many messages are in your mailboxes?  I've had RH defualt imapd
get quite slow on "very" large mailboxes.
