thanks, i checked this and links to the debian packages are dead
but i'll try again later.

i tried this and it said that gdm did not even exist, and so it could
not be done. Then i messed around awhile in dpkg and found the
package and told it to go away. Unfortunately, even after a reboot,
I still have my graphical logins. And now there are two more
problems: i downloaed and installed xfce and ran xfce_setup as
bruce recommended. Everything looked good, but now when i log
in through my evil graphical login, a clock cursor is shown for a few
seconds and it goes back to graphical login. And... my mouse
used to barely respond. Now it doesn't at all. Perhaps a re-install
is in order, now that I understand this thing a bit better.
