thanks, i checked this and links to the debian packages are dead 
but i'll try again later.

i tried this and it said that gdm did not even exist, and so it could 
not be done.  Then i messed around awhile in dpkg and found the 
package and told it to go away.  Unfortunately, even after a reboot, 
I still have my graphical logins.  And now there are two more 
problems: i downloaed and installed xfce and ran xfce_setup as 
bruce recommended. Everything looked good, but now when i log 
in through my evil graphical login, a clock cursor is shown for a few 
seconds and it goes back to graphical login.  And... my mouse 
used to barely respond. Now it doesn't at all.  Perhaps a re-install 
is in order, now that I understand this thing a bit better.
