Our mail server at work is using imap, since we
share a couple of email accounts. The problem is, its quite slow, and if 2-3
people are trying to check their email they're getting messages like "Your imap
server hasn't responded in 60 seconds, would you like to wait?". We don't get
those messages all the time, but enough that its getting annoying. Our mail
server is also masqing our internet connection(lowly 56K modem) also, if that
makes a difference. About a week ago I put in a newer server and we're still
getting timeout messages.
The old server:
486DX2/66
32 megs ram, simms
redhat 6.0 w/2.2.14 kernel
4gig HD
4x cd-rom
ne2000 compatable 10baseT ISA NIC
Vesa HD controller
Vesa video card
New server:
P166mmx
32 megs ram, dimm
redhat 6.0 w/2.2.14
kernel same 4gig HD
same 4x cd-rom 3com 3c905 Boomerang 100baseTx
generic pci video card
I figured the timeouts were just because it was a
486 and had 2-3 people checking email.
I recompiled the kernel to support the new NIC and
its working just fine, except for imap still being slow. I would have assumed
going from a 486 to a Pentium and more than doubling the clock rate would have
resulted in a noticable boost in performance, telneting to it is much quicker.
We're using fetchmail to get gather up email from various accounts, and that
checks every 5 minutes. Right now I'm trying to find updated versions of
fetchmail and imapd, but if anyone has any tips or tricks to get imap to be a
bit snappier I'd appreciate it.
