III. PRESENTATION RECAP

TONIGHT'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (9 active participants tonight)
****************************************************************
The Linux Basics - Beginner's Meeting Part I
By Bruce Smith

Bruce showed us the things that all new Linux users need to
know for basic operations after the installation of their choice
of distributions. This presentation offered everyone a starting
place with Linux. The origins of Linux and the spirit of the GPL
were described. We discussed the differences between Linux
and that unpopular proprietary OS. We heard about the resources
available which include books, web sites, the KLUG list, KLUG
members, and the software documentation. We heard about file
structure, installation, possible configurations, and practical
experience. We discussed SaMBa networking, Apache web
servers, DNS servers, mail servers, FTP servers, Telnet servers,
news servers, DHCP servers, proxy servers, graphics packages,
audio apps, office apps, web browsers, mail clients, databases,
desktop managers, high end gaming, and MORE!!! Remember to
install ALL available docs and 'man' pages. You'll be glad you did! :)
Everything but the RPM's!

IV. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING - TUESDAY 10/10/2000
***********************************************************************

Package Management - Beginner's Meeting Part II
By Bruce Smith

This presentation will discuss what's involved in
downloading and installing software on your Linux
system. Bruce will talk about the two most popular
package formats, RPM files and TAR files. Bruce has
no experience with, and thus will not discuss the
Debian format, DEB files. However, if someone else
is familiar with the DEB format, it would make a
great follow-up presentation, and the speaker will
also receive a free CD!
