Re: Question about Apache server
Scott,
It's like Bruce says, just install Apache from out the box. Besides that we use Apache on our corporate webserver, we also use it on for the internal news system.
The latter is just an old 100Mhz P1 and still it serves more than 50 users. (On SuSE 6.3)
Why use FrontPage? Bruce is right again, it produces a lot of grab and you need to install FrontPages extensions on your web server. Personally that would be a
reason for me not to use it. You can't do anything more with FP than you can't with many other html-editors. It sounds like the '80 when you needed to install an
IBM printer if you used an IBM computer. And when you bought some other brand you needed to install a printer of that brand as well. I really can't see why you
should change you server platform when you use a typical editor. Are you going to update your server again if a new version of FP comes out?
You can even use word processors like WP8 as a html editor (Corel Linux), just save you document as html. It produces code that you need to edit manually
afterwards, but you can use the Netscape editor for that. I can't say this works great (I did it a few times this way) but if you have time on your side it works.
To be honest, I can't tell you what editor is used over here now, I don't do the web-pages on the corporate site. I just maintain the server.
My advice is to install out of the box and NOT to install FP extensions, they are known to weaken your web-server defence. Search the internet for an html editor.
Most Linux distro's have a html editor. Just learn to work with it (and publish you experiences on the list?) SuSE has (I could be wrong in the name here) Kedit
as part of the KDE desktop. I am certain RedHat has something familiar under its gnome interface.
If you have any specific questions you can always mail me, via the list! I can't guarantee you any quick responses but I will see what I can do for you. If your
question is answered by others I may decide not to reply at all. Phoning would be to expensive I am afraid.
Bert.
