Odd X behavior

Hello,

I just installed Debian on my Compaq Armada 1550DMT.  I have gotten
Gnome to come up happily using the 800x600 LCD screen but whenever I
open a window under it acts very buggy.  If you're ever seen a laggy
VNC session then that's exactly the behavior of the windows.

I think it may be something in how the WM is handling the windows
because the menus, icons and titlebars on the apps I run are sharp and
clear, it's just the windows that act hosed.

Any ideas on where to begin on trouble-shooting this?
