Computer show
Hi all, I am pleased to see all the responses to this idea.
I feel it necessary to say that selling distros (ie bsware or even star
office) is just a small part of what should happen at a computer show.
I feel that we will be little to no burden or compotation to other vendors
at a computer show. The fact of the matter is I think other vendors would
benefit our presence. I am sure that most vendors get a little pain in
there stomach when some one asks a linux question.
We can take that burden off there hands and maybe even boost there business.
EXAMPLE: Some one asks us "why they can't get online with linux" maybe it
turns out that they have a win modem and they need a real modem. So one of
our volunteers make a recommendation and behold! a sales opportunity is born
as that person seeks the show for a real modem.
I do not like to buy hard ware unless I am sure it will work with linux with
relative ease.
I have never been able to buy a reasonably priced and up to date version of
linux at a show. Unless I bought a book as Bob pointed out.
Selling CD's (CHEEP)is just a way of paying for the table and getting people
fired up about linux. It would be great if we could even sell a game disk
as well as star office, license permitting of coarse. Many people give out
linux as an O.S. If people have a application they are excited about in
there hands, that will drive there interests toward linux more then just the
novelty of a low cost operating system.
Our primary mission should be support and spreading enthusiasm. We have a
lot of incredibly smart people in this organization. This is an excellent
opportunity to spread knowledge in an open form.
Fliers are good. Fliers that help people accomplish specific linux goal's
in plain english are even better.
I think it would be great if we had fliers the gave you step by step
instructions to do 1 or all of the fallowing thing....
-----The instillation of star office
------How to enable a wheel mouse (in english)
------How to successfully down load and install games such as Quake
------RPM's Simplified.
Of course the Klug logo and web URL would appear at the top and bottom of
each informational handout.
This will help people and get them further interested. People can go to the
web site to get more specific information about KLUG.
Finally it would be awesome to have a few computers there that are all
linux. This way we can answer questions with a hand on approach. It would
be nice to have a computer that is a gamer, another that is a general
workstation and one that show off it server capabilities.
