Well, just for posterity now...

Bus 0, device 7, function 1:
IDE interface: VIA Technologies VT 82C586 Apollo IDE (rev 6).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. Master Capable.
Latency=64.
I/O at 0x6400 [0x6401].
There were no reported bugs or problems with the driver, and I do have the
most current (that I could find). Seems my ide1 has given up the ghost. I
moved the offending hardware to ide0 and it works great (even if it is still
Maxtor). Now my CD won't work as that is connected alone to ide1 which is
only a minor inconvenience right now. The outlook is grim for the
motherboard.
Oh yes, I also learned it is wise to edit fstab before playing musical hard
drives.
Thanks for all the help.
