Used to live in K'zoo now live in Chicago with Ameritech DSL.

Ameritech USED to use an ATM modem but they no longer do that, they are now 
using a Westell Wirespeed external modem with an ethernet link.  They also 
use PPPoE so you need to get that client from Roaring Penguin.  I use it 
with Mandrake 7 and Roaring Penguin made the whole thing effortless.  I'm 
sure you will have no problems using the configuration Ameritech is 
commonly using.
