Answer: char-major-108 is a recent addition to the kernel. These are new
handles for old files. I changed "ppp_generic" to "ppp" and it's now fine.
Also, you may not have /etc/modutils/aliases on your Linux box. They seem
to be Debian specific: all the files in /etc/modutils are either catenated
into /etc/modules.conf, or, if executable, its output is. It gives the
maintainers a standard way to handle module config.
