Don't know about "without the desktop",  the app is still in the "staroffice
window",  if you open more than one app they "share" the window,  so that is
still annoying.  But at least you can go right to what you want,  and setup
drag-n-drop (which I do alot of,  my desktop typically looks like a bomb went
off on a nearby hard drive).
