I'm curious how legit the serial number issue is.  Unless the software supports reporting the serial number it isn't useful for tracking anything,  and I don't know of any Open Source software that does attempt to report.  (And if some CPU families don't have unique ids it pretty much voids the whole scheme doesn' it?).  Also applications would have to make a network connection in order to report the ID,  this seems like it would be difficult to do on any properly proxied/firewalled network that operates on the "deny by default" principle?  Anyone who has looked into this with more depth have thoughts on this issue?
