I. PRESENTATION RECAP

THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (17 active participants tonight)
*****************************************************************
Squid
by Richard Zimmerman

Squid is a high-performance, proxy-caching server for
web clients. Squid supports such protocols such as FTP,
gopher, and HTTP data objects. Unlike traditional caching
software, Squid handles all requests in a single,
non-blocking, I/O-driven process. Tonight, Richard
walked us through how to install & configure Squid.

He used the overhead projector to display a well organized
summary of SQUID usage and configuration considerations.
His presentation was very detailed and a brief outline is
listed here to give you an idea of the content. You had to
have been there to get each individual setting consideration.
There was great info from Squid users in the audience too.
We can hope that this one will get posted to the web site.

Jamie McCarthy installed and configured Squid on his laptop
running the Debian OS during the presentation. He easily
had it up and running in about 30 minutes. Bruce Smith
recommended that it could be used to stabilize Netscape locally.
Great if you have a PIII 666MHz laptop with 256Mb of RAM! :)
Don't try this on your P1/166 with 32Mb of RAM.

MAJOR HINT: Unplanned power downs with NCD's* blows Squid up.
Put Squid on its own partition or drive - Adam William
*NCD's are files not yet commited to disk by the file system

I.	Setting Network Options:
	A. Proxy server port address
	B. Turn off the icp-port and htcp-port for home use
		1. Squid allows communication to other squid
		    servers in the network.

II.	Setting Cache Options:
	A. cache_dir ufs/squid 150 16 256
	B. Many log options available, turn off if not needed

III.	External Support Program Options:
	A. Set FTP options (normally OFF for security)
	B. Authentication: ncsa_auth

IV.	Cache Tuning:
	A. Set options for situation
	B. Set timeouts

V.	Configuration of the Access Control List:

--------------------------------------------------------------
PROXY SERVER DEFINITION: (Source: FOLDOC)
<programming, World-Wide Web> A process providing a
cache of items available on other servers which are
presumably slower or more expensive to access.

This term is used particularly for a World-Wide Web
server which accepts URLs with a special prefix. When
it receives a request for such a URL, it strips off
the prefix and looks for the resulting URL in its local
cache. If found, it returns the document immediately,
otherwise it fetches it from the remote server, saves
a copy in the cache and returns it to the requester.
The cache will usually have an expiry algorithm which
flushes documents according to their age, size, and
access history.
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
COME TO A MEETING TO GET THE REAL GOOD STUFF!!! Y U M M Y!
There were chocolate brownies with guacamole and chips! All
this was washed down with pints of milk! VERY NICE TREATS!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING - TUESDAY 02/06/2001
********************************************************************
Linux for Beginners
by Bruce Smith

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,
see URL: http://kalamazoolinux.org/meetings/installform.html
Contact the KLUG Installmasters for more information:
installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org

Now is the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software
Developer for Armstrong International Inc. where he
is responsible for a HP-UX network of Servers,
Workstations, printers and X-Terminals spanning five
buildings in Three Rivers. Bruce has a degree in
Computer Science and Mathematics from Central Michigan
University. (go Chips! :)~ Bruce runs Linux, almost
exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and
runs a lot of Armstrong's networking services on Linux!

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

BOOGIE CYBER CAFE - KLUG's public commercial Linux project.
Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.
Check out - http://www.boogies.com/ Site by Matt Crampton!
This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogie has been
taken over by Peter Buxton. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie web site!
We need help configuring these new services... the web server
is up. A game testing machine has been configured. Various
upgrades and enhancements being applied currently, including a
replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) server going in. Contact
"Peter Buxton" <somercet@hotmail.com> to help out or for more
info.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We have received notice that they are proceeding with the
processing of our request. We hope to hear from them
REAL SOON with notice of our charitable deductibility.
Charitable and tax-exemption status is routinely granted
to educational not-for-profit organizations. This should
help us attain our financial goals. We need working
capital for increased Linux promotional activities.
