Even better than that: develope code so good your can release it without shame as part of a product so good that everyone wants to use it. Then sell support agreements to the 98% of companies that don't have any geeks on staff to do self support. And supporting a good product is easy money. There are several (at least) companies that exist to support Samba and other open source packages, their support is expensive, but apparently somebody pays for it. From the calls and e-mails I get, there are not enough companies doing this.
