You mean run application on the server but have them display on the laptop?  Do you just want to run "applications" or have your whole desktop be hosted on the server?

Remotely as in "across a LAN" or remotely as in "around the world"?  If you mean around the world I suggest you take a look at VNC,  X is far to heavy for use on the Internet.
