Student Mentorship

In short:
High school student looking for mentorship for the 2001-2002 school year.

In more depth:
I am a junior at the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center (KAMSC), a
magnet school for math, science, and computer science. Next year, as a
senior, I am planning on participating in the KAMSC mentorship program through
which students work with a mentor in the field of work in which the student is
interested. The KAMSC mentorship program involves the student working
on-the-job as an assistant and student to the mentor for a minimum of one hour
per week. Being a likely computer science major, and realizing that many KLUG
members work in the computer industry, I decided that an e-mail to this list
might result in me finding the perfect mentor.
I have extensive computer experience as a systems administrator for a small
(approximately eight computers) network at my school for about a year, as
webmaster and assistant webmaster for my school’s web page for almost two
years, and as an employee of my school district’s technology department this
past summer. I am currently enrolled in AP Computer Science II at KAMSC and
look to attend the University of Michigan’s Camp CAEN this summer.
My interests and skills include programming (C/C++ primarily, with an
interest in python/perl/php/etc.), systems administration, and just about
everything else in the computer industry. I consider myself to be
self-motivated and I have a great interest in maintaining an honorable
reputation. I also have spiked hair and an anti-DVD CCA t-shirt complete with
css_descramble.c code on the back. My car features Slashdot.org and
Thinkgeek.com static window cling stickers and two toy penguins.
If you work in the computer industry and you or someone you know would be
interested in taking me on in a mentorship situation starting in late August
of this year and continuing until at least January and possibly late May of
2002, I encourage you to contact me. If you want to know a little more about
me, you can visit my website at http://www.wastedgenius.com (note: I am not a
pothead; please notice the words “not like this”). I would very much
appreciate an e-mail with details regarding where you work, what you do, and
some contact information. Thanks you.

-Josh

Note: In the interest of full disclosure, I got in some trouble this year at
school for computer tampering. However, I have no interest in breaking into
your computer system at your place of business; I have learned my lesson. I
know now that curiosity is a good thing, but there are times when you just
need to leave things alone.
