You need soundcore (that's the "core" of the sound system).

I would recommend compiling it into the kernel a newer kernel/module.

Also, the distortion might be do to the system being busy.  Do you have 
lots of other stuff running?  What player are you  using?  I use mpg123 
and I rarely get distortion even on a heavily loaded system.  I've 
noticed that xmms tends to distort at the drop of a hat, even on high 
end systems.
